oh
hello hello hello how is everybody doing
um i hope you can hear me all right
let me just move some things around okay
so
um today uh we are going to learn
um some new words and
they all have to do with spending money
spending money okay so we're going to be
talking about
money today and um if you didn't know
um from today all of december
i'm going to be posting new lessons
every single day here on the youtube
channel okay
so please subscribe and
um please turn on your notifications
so sometimes i'll be going live and
sometimes i'll be posting
um just regular videos so um
yeah please subscribe and turn on
notifications so you know when those
lessons are
out okay so yes new lessons every single
day
but today we're going to be talking
specifically
about money and shopping
okay so i have three
new words or expressions for you
so the first one the first
word is splurge
splurge and um
if you don't watch the facebook
facebook live streams um the word
splurge
came up just yesterday uh in our our
lesson
so splurge splurge what does it mean to
splurge so
if you watched that lesson
you might already know what it means so
splurge means to spend
money um kind of freely like
an unnecessary things right
so for example um let's see
uh i usually save my money
but sometimes i splurge
on a good pair of shoes
i splurge on a good pair of shoes
that means i kind of spend freely
i don't care about the cost that much i
just spend the money to get something
nice
okay to splurge to splurge
um it can also be a noun so for example
um christmas christmas in the u.s is
a time when people spend a lot of money
so we could say
a christmas splurge like a something
splurge
um but a lot of the times we use it as a
verb
like to splurge on a fancy dinner
to splurge on some new clothes
okay so is there anything that you
splurge on what do you splurge on
um please write it in the comments so it
could either be
um you splurge on um
food on clothing or
on like study materials do you splurge
on um like books
it could be anything okay splurge
to splurge okay
the next one we have is shop
around shop around
so what does it mean to shop around
to shop around so
if you shop around you are going
to um different stores could be
physically
or online and you are comparing
prices okay so um i recently bought
a new refrigerator but uh before
i decided which refrigerator i was going
to buy
i went to many stores i did research
online and i found um
the best refrigerator at the best price
so the best quality at the cheapest
price
so i shopped around before buying
my refrigerator okay does that make
sense
so to shop around means
to go and find the best price
for an item okay
and then we have run up run
up so run up is a phrasal verb with many
different meanings and today we're just
going to focus on
one meaning okay we're gonna focus on
the meaning um
when it comes to debt or bills
okay so when we say run
up it means um you do
things and it creates uh
um it adds it to your
debt or to your bill okay does that make
sense
so it probably doesn't make sense let me
give you a better explanation
um okay so
let's say that i turned on
all of the lights in my house i turned
on all of the lights and i
left them on for a week
so by doing that action of
turning on all of my lights and keeping
them on for a week
i would probably run up
a an expensive electricity bill
okay i would run up my electricity bill
so putting the lights on adds up
boom so runs up a
high bill okay runs up an expensive
bill so we usually use
run up when talking about debt
or when talking about bills so run
up um a student loan debt
run up my phone bill okay
so you're adding things to your
debt that makes it higher and higher and
higher okay so you're gonna have
something expensive in the end
so i hope um you do things um
to not run up your debt not to run up
your bills
okay so for example um
uh i always turn off my lights
during the day as to not run up
an expensive electric bill okay
very good so let's look at the
definitions it's probably easier
than my explanation okay let's take a
look
okay so
does everyone see that all right okay
splurge
splurge spending money
freely and maybe like excessively
and um you don't really you don't really
care about the price it's okay to spend
a little bit more
okay so splurge on coffee
maybe you bought expensive coffee
splurge
on english lessons maybe you think
studying english in class is very
important so you
spend a little bit more on taking
some good english lessons okay
shop around shop around to shop around
okay so to shop around means to look
for the most suitable
item or service oops there it is service
for the lowest price for the lowest
price
so you go around to many shops and try
to find
um the best item or best service for the
best
price the lowest price okay this is a
very
smart way to not to run up a
shopping bill okay not run up your
credit card
so run up what does run up mean um you
do
things that cause you to owe a large
amount of money
so your actions
run up a large bill
or you uh you get a large debt
okay so maybe if uh if you don't
shop around you might end up
running up a huge credit card bill
okay so you use your credit card
here you buy some clothes here you buy
some shoes here
you tend to splurge you don't shop
around
just charging your credit card you will
eventually
run up a large bill okay
i hope that is understandable please let
me know if you have any questions in the
comments okay
so today is very simple we're just gonna
have
a quick quick lesson so
we have just three we're gonna use each
one of these
one time okay so
let's see number one he made
too many international calls
and a large
phone bill um what do you think is
the correct answer here
he made too many
international calls so if you make
many international calls um
you might make your
phone bill rather large right
so it is quite expensive to
call internationally if you don't use
specific services right so
he made too many international calls and
a large phone bill what do you think
okay i'll give you a second and then i'm
going to write down the answer
okay the correct answer
is
[Music]
and we're going to put it in the correct
tense also remember we want the correct
tenses
okay so
the correct words the correct answer i
should say is
ran up he made too many
international calls and ran
up a large phone bill he ran up a large
phone bill
very good okay how about number two
let's take a look at number two
okay uh let's see before
making a big purchase
before making a big purchase it
is important to
first so what are we going to do
first before we make a big purchase
so if you don't know to purchase
something means to
buy something so we can say make a
purchase
okay before making a big purchase
that means before buying something very
expensive a big purchase is something
expensive
so like a refrigerator or
a house or a new computer
okay does everybody have the answer
okay before making a big purchase
it is important to
[Music]
we're gonna say shop around
shop around
okay first so before making a big
purchase
before spending a lot of money it is
important
to shop around first okay
so you're gonna go you're gonna do your
research you're gonna look at different
prices at different stores you're gonna
look at different products
and you're gonna find the best product
for you
at the lowest cost shop around
very good very good okay
now this is the last one and it should
be obvious because we have
just one word left okay
so number three i love
cooking okay i love cooking at home
but sometimes i like to
on a fancy dinner at a nice restaurant
this says restaurant it's very small
i love cooking at home but
sometimes i like to
on a fancy dinner at a nice restaurant
okay oops there was a light blocking
uh the vocabulary words okay so does
everybody know
the answer you should okay
so the correct answer is
splurge splurge
splurge it sounds like a very funny word
right
splurge it doesn't sound like a very
beautiful word
okay i love cooking at home
but sometimes i like to splurge on a
fancy dinner
at a nice restaurant okay so
sometimes i like to spend a little bit
more money
and go out for a nice dinner okay
so i'm going to read this one more time
so please listen
and if you can repeat out loud
remember that speaking is the best way
to improve
and the best way to remember vocabulary
we need to use them
in order to to remember them okay
so number one listen and then try to
repeat if you can
number one okay
he made too many international calls and
ran up a large phone bill
okay i'm gonna say it one more time a
little bit quickly
all right he made too many international
calls
and ran up a large phone bill
okay were you able to repeat it out loud
if not that is okay um just come back to
this lesson and
and try to repeat okay very good
let's go on to number two okay
i'll read it a little bit slowly and
then i'll read it quickly okay
before making a big purchase it is
important
to shop around first
okay i'm going to say a little bit
quickly now
before making a big purchase it is
important to shop around first
okay very good all right let's try
number three
okay i love cooking at home
but sometimes i like to splurge on a
fancy dinner
at a nice restaurant
okay so i'm gonna say it a little bit
quickly
try to listen try to repeat okay
i love cooking at home but sometimes i
like to splurge on a fancy dinner at a
nice restaurant
okay very good i hope you are able to at
least
attempt at least try to repeat
okay so um they are kind of long
sentences
so if you can't um repeat very naturally
maybe try and read them out loud a few
times get used to saying these words
get used to saying these sentences and
then
come back and try to repeat after me
okay
everyone did a very very good job um
that is awesome
so i will be back for a new lesson
um every day this month so please
subscribe
and please turn on notifications um
and if you could share this video with
um your friends who are also studying
english
and that way we can grow our community
okay
thank you everyone so much for watching
and
um i hope you enjoy uh all of the
lessons
this month it's very exciting and it is
quite a challenge for me
to um upload new lessons every day so
um i hope that you enjoy them okay
so uh thank you so much for watching and
i will see you
tomorrow for another lesson thank you so
much
bye everyone thank you
